Administrative procedures

Building permitsin Cameroon

A mandatory, legally regulated step — and one of the architect's core roles.

The building permit is what allows any construction site in Cameroon to start legally. Here is what you need to know, and how YAMBE Architectes supports you through the process.

What is a building permit in Cameroon?

A building permit is the mandatory administrative authorisation required before any construction, extension or significant alteration of a building in Cameroon. It ensures the project complies with the planning, safety and environmental rules in force in the municipality concerned.

Building without a permit exposes you to administrative penalties, up to a stop-work order or demolition of the building — a risk no project should take given the investment involved.

Who can draw up the plans for the application?

The architectural plans required for the building permit application must be drawn up by an architect registered with the National Order of Architects of Cameroon (ONAC). This guarantees that the plans comply with current technical and regulatory standards.

YAMBE Architectes is registered with ONAC under number 731, and prepares each application in line with the requirements of the municipality concerned.

The documents usually required

The exact contents of the application can vary by municipality and type of project, but it generally includes: proof of ownership or right to use the land (land title or equivalent), architectural plans signed by the architect, a descriptive statement of the project, and the applicant's identity documents.

Rather than trying to piece together a generic list on your own — often incomplete or out of date — we check with you, case by case, exactly which documents are required for your project and your municipality.

How long does it take to get a building permit?

Processing time varies by municipality, the complexity of the project and how complete the submitted application is. An application properly prepared from the outset, with compliant plans and professional support, limits the back-and-forth that most often lengthens timelines.

The role of YAMBE Architectes in your application

We handle the entire process: design of compliant plans, preparation of the complete file, submission to the relevant authority and follow-up until the permit is granted. You keep a single point of contact for what is often seen as the most complex stage of a construction project.
